We all know Google’s pretty much the first word that comes to mind in online search. But just how far ahead are they? According to this infographic by Pingdom, Google isn’t just ahead; it’s in a different planet altogether.

The chart uses statistics from StatCounter, and it puts Google at 90.57% of the entire global, non-mobile search market. But what it really impresses in is its mobile search market share.

Google have all but obliterated the competition in this regard: a whopping 98.29% of the mobile market is theirs. The cloest competitor, Yahoo!, comes it at a paltry 0.81%.

In a blog post, Pingdom wrote that Google’s domination could be broken if “Apple kicks Google out of the iOS platform” or if the “Windows Phone 7 becomes a huge success”, both of which are unlikely to come into fruition (sorry, Microsoft).

Is this it for current and would-be rivals? Can anyone topple Google from its search throne?
