While it’s no secret that The New York Times app for the iPhone works like a charm, what makes it such might not be as out in the open. Well, not anymore. The esteemed media outlet is now offering other publishers a platform to deliver iPhone and iPad apps, just like its own.
Called the Press Engine, other media organizations can use this to draw on The New York Times’ digital experience in “developing and designing mobile technology and apps”, said general manager Michael Greenspon.
He added, “We are providing our expertise in news reader applications to allow publishers of all sizes to offer their readers elegant applications for iPhone and iPad devices.”
These platforms—or templates—will include features like the ability to save articles, offline reading, rich media implementation and share functionality, among others.
Already, big publishers like the International Herald Tribute, Telegraph Media Group and The Dallas Morning News are all queueing up for Press Engine, which is due to launch in the fourth quarter this year.
