OpenIDEO Crowdsources Design Ideas for Social Good

These aren’t for-profit products you’d usually find on Kickstarter or any of those crowdsourcing platforms. OpenIDEO, an initiative by design and consultancy firm IDEO, wants to harness ideas for good instead.

Just launched today, OpenIDEO is putting out the call for designers and other ‘social innovators’ to participate in what it calls “public challenges for social good”.

So how does it all work? First, a challenge is posted on the website, putting into motion three development phases: inspiration, conceptualizing and evaluation.

Community members then contribute inspirational photos, sketches of ideas—anything that makes sense, really. And anyone can give their feedback during any point of the process.

The first challenge was posed by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The English chef, who has championed healthy diets for schoolchildren across the UK, is furthering that cause.

With the new ‘Food Revolution’ challenge, OpenIDEO are on the lookout for designers who can come up with a solution to the question of “How can we raise kids’ awareness of the benefits of fresh food so they can make better choices?”

If you have an answer to that, head on to the OpenIDEO site with that idea in tow.
