Design a Water Vase with…Water

You usually fill a vase with water, but what if you could use it as the vase itself? With a high-speed camera, computer software and 3D printing technologies, designer Fung Kwok Pan can build one for you.

The Singaporean designer has come up with the ‘Fluid Vase’ that is shaped after the splash of water as it is poured into a vase.

He uses a high-speed camera to track the exact motion of fluid as it hits the vase at 500 frames per second, before creating a computer simulation of the process. These simulations are used to produce a 3D virtual mesh, which Fung can then use as blueprint for the vase.

The motivation behind the project is to “translate actions commonly associated with an object into the object itself, which in this case is the action of pouring water into a vase,” according to the designer.

While not available yet, Fung hopes to give users the option to adjust various options in the simulation, such as the speed and volume of water, which will result in different splashes.
