Infographic on Mobile Advertising Charts Massive Growth

‘Mobile’ might very well be the watchword of 21st century advertising, if this infographic is anything to go by. The beautifully designed chart, done up by Tiffany Farrant, details everything there is to know about mobile advertising, coupons, and the resulting consumer spend.

The most eye popping piece of data is the predicted growth of the mobile market. Worth a paltry US$160 million in 2008, the market is expected to hit US$3.1 billion by 2013.

And coupons are the way to go to get people spending, it seems. Right now, they’re just spending US$90 million, but by 2014, consumers will spend a whopping US$22.6 billion through coupon sales.

At this rate, coupons might just be the way to go for brands to cash in on the mobile craze. According to the chart, 57% of consumers who used coupons to purchase an item wouldn’t have bought it without the coupon.

So just what are these ‘coupons’ and how do they make their splash? Farrant describes five types—QR codes, SMS, geolocation, smart posters and apps—together with a quick rundown on how they work.

With the smartphone user base expected to overtake the typical feature phones, and geo-based social networks like Foursquare and Gowalla becoming more influential, it only makes sense for businesses to hop on the geo bandwagon.
