International Competition for Life Science and Design

Visionary Medicine: Life Science Design

"Concepts for a better life" - this is both slogan and objective of the life science design award: concepts. Designer and business people, researchers and scientists are called on to cooperate in developing trendsetting concepts for products of life science. The life science design conference on June 14th, 2005 in the red dot design museum will be the start of the competition. Those interested can look for more information and register at www.lsd-award.de.

The New Industry Life Science Design

"Computer tomographs and telemedicine produce pictures of the innermost on screen as if by magic; cells grow on miniature scaffolds reconstructing joint cartilages in the human body; and titanium scull implants grow into one with the remaining bone: All this we owe to researchers and practicians who have the vision to develop new products and solutions improving people's life", says Dr. Sylvia Deutschmann, managing director of Life Science Agency. Together with the project partners she wants to show that the methods of these scientists and business people, such as the integration of new materials or miniaturization, open up new ways between "naturalness and artificiality". Here she sees a huge potential for the future - not only for scientists and doctors but also for designers and enterprises: "Where new ideas are born when different knowledge comes together the most important innovations develop as well as a new quality of design", says Professor Dr. Peter Zec, designated chairman of the world design federation ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) and head of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen. "Designers, scientists and business people are encouraged to give ideas a design and to develop human products from potentialities."

The life science design award: concepts

The competition reacts to the increasing economic and social significance of health and medicine: Life Science Design is a booming market with broad economic potential. The 'life science design award' is supposed to support this development and to demonstrate the progress of this industry. The competition encourages the innovation power of enterprises and designers by bringing them together with scientists and inviting them to approach each other by transcending the limits of their disciplines, and to join in developing new concepts in the field of Life Sciences. Contributions to the competition can be submitted until August 1st, 2005. Afterwards a special jury of researchers and designers will evaluate the ideas and will make a selection of ten participants who will be supported with project funds. Until the Medica 2005, the leading trade fair, the selected project participants will advance their development and produce a model which will be presented at a special exhibition of the Medica 2005. There the jury will announce the winner of the competition, who will receive a prize of EUR 20,000.

The life science design conference

The first international life science and design conference will be the prelude to the life science design award. It will take place in the red dot design museum in Essen on June 14th, 2005. At the conference designers and business people, researchers and scientists will find a place to communicate and to collect fresh ideas on how to design new products with regard to functional and esthetical aspects. Three experts in science, economy and design will examine the broad spectrum of life science design in their keynotes. The speakers will be Professor Dr. Dr. Dr. med. habil. Hanns Hatt, chair of cell physiology at the Ruhr University Bochum, Professor Dr. Peter Zec, managing director of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, Essen and ICSID President Elect, Montreal as well as Professor Dr. Ing. Uvo Hölscher, head of the Use-Lab of the University of Applied Science Münster. Afterwards the participants have the opportunity to extend their know-how and their contacts in one of the two parallel workshops devoted to the subjects "Product Development and Design Between Scientific Innovation and Medical Acceptance" and "Naturalness and Artificiality - Symbiosis of Materials, Interfaces and Surroundings". Christoph Böninger from designafairs, Munich and Dr. Ingo Krisch, Fraunhofer IMM, Duisburg will be among the speakers.
