The magazine famous for spreads of naked women has decided to cover up for Apple’s iPad. For Playboy’s new HD iPad app (not to be confused with the older iPhone one), all nudity had to be removed, in line with Apple’s strict App Store policies.

The app, developed by Jump Games, will still feature Playmates—all dressed up, though. Editorial features and columns make up the bulk of the app, according to a review of the app on MinOnline.

As if the ‘no nudity’ policy wasn’t a big enough gripe, the review also slammed the app for having “very little interactivity”—it merely comprises “oversized thumbnails”, wrote Steve Smith.

At US$4.99, the same price as the magazine is on newsstands, and with very little of the actual content people pay for Playboy, the publishers need to take a completely different route if they want to capture the eReader market.

But this Playboy example, if anything, raises the concern of how developers have no choice but to abide by Apple’s ways.

Adult magazines and content are probably just one of the many areas left uncharted by the iPhone and iPad; and while not everyone would agree to allowing such apps for download, having an age restriction up might prove a better solution than an all-out ban.
