Oracle, Google Wage War Over Java

Oracle has on 12 August filed a suit against Google for infringing on Java-related copyrights and patents in developing the Android technology.

“In developing Android, Google knowingly, directly and repeatedly infringed Oracle’s Java-related intellectual property,” said Oracle spokesperson Karen Tillman. “This lawsuit seeks appropriate remedies for their infringement.”

Java, a technology that lets developers write apps that work across various platforms, was acquired by Oracle through the latter’s purchase of Sun Microsystems earlier this year.

Android devices are proving a hit in the US smartphone market—Google has claimed 200,000 units are shipped each day—and is expected to be in almost a fifth of all smartphones in the world by 2012, according to iSuppli.

The complaint was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.
