A Volcano That Won’t Erupt: The Estadio Chivas Stadium

An artificial structure it may be, but the Estadio Chivas in Guadalajara, Mexico was nevertheless designed to blend in with its natural surroundings.

Design by Jean Marie Massaud and Daniel Pouzet of Studio Massaud, the stadium is meant to resemble an exploding volcano. The region's natural greenery is planted on the slopes of the stadium, while its white roof mimics a white cloud of smoke for that volcanic touch.

The stadium will look more like an actual volcano in two years, when the newly-planted vegetation and trees have fully grown out.

The environmentally friendly stadium is equipped with an irrigation system that collects rainwater to freshen its fields. It has also done away with an air-conditioned A-level box as well, opting for a cross-ventiliation system.

And to press home the design rationale of ‘blending in’, the stadium’s 8,500 parking lots are hidden from view, under the ‘slopes’ of the stadium.
