In a bid to “make sharing simple”, Twitter has launched its own official ‘Tweet Button’, similar to what TweetMeme has been doing so far.
The button will allow users to share links directly from the page they’re on, pre-populated with a shortened link pointing to the relevant item.
For web publishers, Twitter says its new button will “help publishers grow traffic and increase their Twitter following”; but this has already been made possible with offerings from third-party button-makers, TweetMeme’s being the biggest one with 750 million impressions created daily.
So how will the official button affect them? In a blog post, Twitter said that it is “working closely” with TweetMeme and that the latter will be pointing to the Twitter ‘Tweet Button’ instead.
And the partnership goes beyond pushing each others’ buttons, too.
In a TweetMeme blog post, the company announced it will be “working even more closely in the future on delivering real-time curation of the Twitter Firehose”.
Twitter posted up a video detailing the features of the new ‘Tweet Button’:
