Forget the iPads, Kindles and Nooks—it’s the humble newspaper that’s the best ‘eReader’ on the market now. Or so says a facetious McSweeney’s article.
After conducting a three-week series of ‘tests’, ‘engineers’ at the literary publication have concluded that the daily newspaper beat its digital cousins on several counts.
In terms of size, the newspaper can be flipped open for a far wider ‘display area’ than those tech gadgets; and it makes for a great fly-swatter as well, something iPad users wouldn’t really use their device for.
But the top reason for John Flowers, the author of the piece, to declare the newspaper as clear winner was, ironically, its lack of WiFi.
Newspaper readers—or ‘users’—take this lack of internet connectivity to form meaningful social relationships, something their digital brethren would rather sacrifice in favor of “downloading recipes for artichoke cheese dip they’ll never use”.
Sure, it’s all for a laugh, but with so much debate in the media about which eReader is the best, and how the eBook will relegate physical material to dusty shelves, the article brings to mind that good ol’ adage: “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.
