When Typography Becomes Cartography

In a complete reversal of the typical map, Damon Zucconi’s ‘Fata Morgana’ web app does away with all images, leaving only text to chart the globe.

The app is essentially a Google Maps clone, letting users zoom in and out to reveal more typographical, not topographical, data.

So all counties, cities and even individual roads are marked by their name alone, a comment on the intersection between language and reality, or how the former can shape our perception of the latter.

Despite—or because of—the artistic overtures of ‘Fata Morgana’, however, it probably isn’t wise to use this map on your next road trip.
