Skateboards, Art and…Afghanistan

What do skateboards, artists and Afghanistan have in common? Nothing much, really, but a new initiative is merging the three for a good cause.

Skateistan is a US nonprofit organization that operates a youth skating school and facility in war-torn Afghanistan, hoping to foster “national and international communication” between the Afghan and international cultures.

And part of their latest fundraising project is where the ‘art’ portion of the triumvirate comes in.

The NGO has enlisted the services of artists, designers and skateboarders to design a series of limited edition, exclusive decks to be auctioned off on eBay.

Over 50 artists have used the decks as canvasses, including street artist Cake, installation artist Olafur Eliasson, and—our personal favorite design—Juan James.

Juan James is a collaboration between Chilean-born, New York-based artist Sebastian Errazuriz, and Carlton DeWoody. Their two designs (pictured above) were the most contextually relevant of the lot, playing on familiar Islamic iconography like the Burka dress and the prayer mat used by Muslims in their daily prayer.
