In Ironic Twist, Books Feature as ‘Natural’ Garden Ornaments

As a comment on the sustainability of paper production, Berlin-based landscape architect Thilo Forlkerts and artist Rodney Latourelle have taken 40,000 books to form hedges as part of their Jardin de la Connaissance installation.

The installation is part of the 11th International Garden Festival in Métis, Quebec, and while the installation’s name—“Garden of Knowledge” in English—hints at more Biblical themes, the first thing that strikes viewers isn’t Adam and Eve but paper production and its source—trees.

Returning to its natural and original source, the paper in the books appear mutilated, deformed, and crucially, unable to regenerate—and hence, sustain—itself.

Yet another reason to switch to eBooks, perhaps.
