The End of the Game World: Graphic Glitches as Art

Sometimes it truly is a matter of perspective. While some view graphic glitches on computer games as annoyances, >Robert Overweg sees the artistic possibilities of these software malfunctions.

Under Overweg's vision, common graphic errors of game characters suspended in mid-air and half-formed buildings become elements of surreal imagery.

These images are created by no sheer accident either; the Dutch artist searches the virtual landscapes of first-person shooters for technical graphic glitches that he could use to create these bizarre situations.

Should these shots be considered as personal creations of an artist, since video game designers were the ones who had created the virtual landscape?

Overweg describes games “as the new public spaces of contemporary society” and his works as means of questioning “the system…and the people” behind these 3D platforms.

So what makes this art instead of a mere screenshot? They’re not visually astounding; in fact, they could be ‘bug reports’ for these games. But then again, contemporary and conceptual art follows no rules.
