Macabre Snow Globes Aren’t for Kids
Forget the Disney characters and cheery holiday material, these snow globes aren’t from any children’s fantasy scene.
The ones conjured up by British and Spanish artists Water Martin and Paloma Muñoz, respectively, prefer the darker, more morbid route.
Similar to the gory reinvention of kitschy ceramic figures we saw a while back, these tiny capsules capture snippets of violence, often left to the viewer to fill in the blanks. Scenes of a hanged man, a giant spider gobbling someone up, children being thrown into a well—the globes are a study in terror.
And because the figures are frozen still in their water prisons, the artists manage to aestheticize their horror panoramas rather elegantly, making the snow globes all the more chilling and affective. These aren’t pieces you’d want sitting in your child’s bedroom.
