MTV, Foursquare Team Up to Battle STDs


Go for a check up and check-in, Foursquare and MTV seem to be saying. Part of the latter’s ‘Get Yourself Tested’ campaign against the spread of STDs is encouraging Foursquare users to check themselves in when they get tested for such diseases.

The idea behind it, according to a Wall Street Journal report, is to reduce the stigma of STD testing. And what better way to do that than to broadcast it to all your friends.

There’s a reward for it too; those who check-in at clinics will receive one of those virtual badges Foursquare is known for. Unlocking the badge will give users a chance to win a trip to New York City, coupled with backstage passes to an MTV show.

This is the location-based social networking site’s first foray into a cause-related effort and the company is “excited to raise awareness of such an important cause,” said Foursquare’s Jonathan Crowley in a statement.

It’s for a good cause, sure, but will people actually disclose such sensitive information to the wider public? The wider public probably wouldn't, but given the demographic of MTV viewers, this might just work.
