Jump, or the City Will Cage You Up

Scale the steps to the top and take a leap into the unknown at Emergency Exit, an installation at Venice's 12th international Architecture Biennale.

The designers of this installation, artist Agnieszka Kurant and architect Aleksandra Wasilkowska, aim to explore the intangible phenomena that shape urban spaces by making familiar spaces seem strange.

The scene itself looks quite surreal: metal cages are stacked high, resembling the scaffolding of abandoned and incomplete buildings, while ambient lighting and smoke create a dream-like atmosphere.

Warning signs that read “Jump at your own risk” hang above the installation; and visitors are encouraged to leap from the cages into artificially generated clouds, symbolizing an escape from the trappings of urbanity.
