What is it with fashion ads these days? Recently, we featured the Frank Miller-directed Gucci Guilty ad. Now, another ad by a famed director has come to attention: the new Bleu de Chanel ad directed by Martin Scorsese.
The ad features actor model Gaspard Ulliel, who described the experience as being “more like a short film than a commercial”. The Gucci ad too, included Hollywood stars Chris Evans and Rachel Evan Woods.
So is the 'one-minute film' the current fad for luxury labels’ ad campaigns?
The use of celebrities in brand promotion is nothing new, but the involvement of well-known film directors could be another attempt at emphasizing the exclusivity and prestige of these luxury brands.
Fashion house Missoni for instance, hired experimental filmmaker Kenneth Anger for its Fall/Winter campaign.
While the Gucci and Chanel ads are as slick as the typical blockbuster film, the psychedelic Missoni spot looks more avant-garde film than commercial.
Are such ads worth the expenditure? Whatever the motivations behind such ad campaigns, these ads certainly are visual treats for the viewers.
