Facebook Improves Photos, Will Flickr Suffer?

Facebook, in addition to being the largest social network, is also one of the biggest photo hosting websites. About 2.5 billion photos are uploaded to Facebook each month, according to ReadWriteWeb—that’s 1.2 million photos a second.

But Facebook’s emphasis has always been about sharing photos rather than on the quality of those photos. A new upgrade, however, is planning on changing this.

Rolled on a few days ago, the new revamp has three significant improvements: the ability to upload high resolution images, a lightbox view, and easier tagging and uploading.

At times, Facebook photos seem like they don’t look as vivid as they do on your own computer; but now, these photos are eight times larger than before, the largest upgrade Facebook has performed on its photos (see image above).

The lightbox view is similar to the one Flickr implemented a few months ago. Pretty straightforward, it’s a feature Facebook should have added a long time ago.

A batch tagging system rounds up the upgrades. Upon uploading a set of photos, users can tag multiple photos in the same album all at once.

Of the photo uploading system, Facebook has also added some under-the-hood Flash upgrades. “We’ve completely rebuilt our photo uploader to be more stable and reliable,” wrote product manager Sam in a blog post.
