For Physics Geeks, A Wall of Art

For bedroom physics geeks dying to see the inside of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), CERN has a compromise: this huge wall mural of its guts.

CERN commissioned American artist Josef Kristofoletti to paint the giant mural of the ATLAS particle detector in the LHC. And although the mural might be three stories high, it’s only a third of the detector’s actual size.

”We were thrilled to learn that ATLAS and particle physics had found their way into popular art,” said ATLAS physicist Michael Barnett to PhysOrg. “And it was a natural next step to bring that art to CERN.”

CERN isn’t stopping there, however. According to the PhysOrg report, the laboratory is starting to develop an artist-in-residence program.
