Gap Scraps New Logo, Crowdsourcing Effort
By Graphic Design / IO, 12 Oct 2010
Just a week after it was launched into the online world, the new Gap logo has been scrapped—it was just awful, it seems.
"We’ve seen an outpouring of comments from customers and the online community in support of the iconic blue box logo,” said Gap North America president Marka Hansen in a statement, leading to Gap discontinuing the new, Helvetica logo.
When Gap announced the logo change on its Facebook page, more than 2,000 comments were left by disgruntled fans; and Gap even tried crowdsourcing for a new one, much to many a designer’s—including AIGA’s—dismay.
Hansen said, “This wasn’t the right project at the right time for crowdsourcing. There may be a time to evolve our logo, but if and when that time comes, we’ll handle it in a different way.”
