Report: Microsoft to Spend $1 Billion on Marketing

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 was launched to much fanfare as the Crispin, Porter + Bogusky ads divided opinion and plans for Isaiah Mustafa of Old Spice fame to sell the mobile operating system in Australia. To add on to that, an All Things D article is now saying that the software giant will spend a billion in marketing money.
It’s a whopping number meant to be divided between the Windows Phone 7 and Kinect, a product under its Xbox 360 platform. Microsoft is going to need all the media ammunition to battle it out with Apple and Google in the smartphone realm, and Sony and Nintendo in the gaming arena.
According to All Things D, the money will be spent on promotions with brands like Burger King and Pepsi, a YouTube homepage takever, and various print, digital and television ad buys. There’s even a Time Square event in the works.
Sure, the ad industry won’t mind, but is Microsoft as a brand and company heading up the right alley with this?
