When Google announced it will be blocking Facebook from allowing users to import their Gmail address book to look for friends, the latter didn’t take too kindly to the barricade. So it one-upped their Silicon Valley rivals with this cheeky move.
Facebook now offers a deep link into Gmail’s contact export system—which allows users to extract and download a contact list file—and then re-upload it to Facebook.
It’s a bold, if a little childish, move to circumvent Google’s restriction—and it does remind us of Mark Zuckerberg’s ‘FaceMash’ revenge swat as portrayed in The Social Network. Don’t expect it to last, though.
A Google spokesperson told Wired.com: “We’re disappointed that Facebook didn’t invest their time in making it possible for their users to get their contacts out of Facebook. As passionate believers that people should be able to control the data they create, we will continue to allow our users to export their Google contacts.
