Amazon Makes Every Website an eBookstore

It didn’t take Amazon long to counter Google’s recent eBookstore offering. The online retailer is expanding its Kindle for the Web program to include any website.

This means that anyone with a web browser can read and buy full Kindle books, all without download or installation, Amazon said in a statement. Bookstores, retailers, authors and the like can offer these Kindle books on their own site by installing a widget, earning referral fees while they’re at it.

The new Kindle for the Web will also let users annotate, bookmark, and create notes.

Previously, the feature only allowed users to access the first few chapters for free.

The feature was, surprisingly, demonstrated at the Google Chrome event, and will support the operating system. All eBooks downloaded on the web-based app can also be synced to the Kindle device.
