Facebook intern Paul Butler visualized the map of the world using data the social networking site is rife wife: human connections.
Butler plotted points of connection between people from different cities to arrive at the stunning image you see above (click to enlarge). The entire outline of the globe, including borders between countries, are defined not by geographies but human relationships.
He writes: “What really struck me, though, was knowing that the lines didn’t represent coasts or rivers or political borders, but real human relationships. Each line might represent a friendship made while traveling, a family member abroad, or an old college friend pulled away by the various forces of life.”
Interestingly, there is no Antartica or even China, Russia and Central Africa to be found on the map, marking places where Facebook has little to no reach.
