MoMA Purchases Controversial Crucifix Video

The Museum of Modern Art, has just purchased a controversial video by David Wojnarowicz that had previously been removed from an exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery, reports The Washington Post.

The video, A Fire in My Belly was removed then due to its offensive nature that depicted an image of a crucifix with ants crawling on it. Its removal sparked a heated debate among artists and art activists, who organized protests against the National Portrait Gallery, the Post said.

MoMA announced it had purchased the 13-minute version and a seven-minute excerpt of the video. It will join 13 other works by Wojnarowicz already featured in the museum.

"They are standing behind the film and making a statement. For a powerful, important and historic museum to make this statement, I'm thrilled," said Wendy Olsoff, the co-owner of the PPOW Gallery in New York, which handles the Wojnarowicz estate.
