Hard for Facebook to Beat Mixi in Japan, Says Zynga Japan Head

Despite its dominance in many parts of the world, Facebook may find it hard to crack the Japanese market and overtake the current leading social network Mixi, said head of Zynga Japan in an interview, reports Bloomberg.

Robert Goldberg said Japan is the “one place where Facebook may not end up being dominant”.

“They’ve been successful in most countries in the world, but Japan has to be different,” he was quoted as saying.

Facebook has 2.2 million Japanese users while Mixi boasts 22 million.

Goldberg suggests privacy and translation issues as two major factors limiting Facebook’s growth in the Far Eastern nation. His company, which developed the popular game FarmVille, chose Mixi rather than Facebook for the game’s Japanese launch.

Still, the world’s largest social network is focusing on expanding in both Japan and Russia, CEO Mark Zuckerberg stressed in an previous interview. Facebook managed to double its user base in the past six months, according to Bloomberg.
