Twitter Worth $8 to $10 Billion: WSJ
The Journal cited discussions between the micro-blogging service and potential suitors like Facebook and Google that price Twitter in that ballpark.
"Are these prices justifiable based on financial multiples? No," Ethan Kurzweil of venture capital firm Bessemer Venture Partners told the Journal. But Kurzweil added the market is valuing highly personal user data, of which Twitter has a lot of.
However, Twitter’s revenue was only US$45 million in 2010, and it actually lost money that year on hiring and data centers. This year, Twitter is expected to bring in US$100 million to US$110 million, the Journal said.
And despite the appeal of the high valuations, Twitter’s executives seem to focus on creating a “large” and “independent” company, according to the Journal, who cited people familiar with the matter as saying Twitter believes it can grow to a US$100 billion company.
