The Portuguese newspaper i (short for informação) has on Monday been named the best-designed newspaper by the Society for News Design (SND).

Launched in 2009, i is a compact daily that runs both hard news and features. The SND awarded i for being able to “take the best of the visual language of newspapers, magazines and other publications and create something new that is more than the sum of its parts”, wrote SND’s Lee Steele.

Additionally, i was praised for its wise use of color, a strong grid system and classic typography.

“i can inspire visual journalists and publishers anywhere in the world to rethink their models and revise or create new ones that best serve their audiences,” Steele wrote.
