Amazon will launch an app store for the Android mobile operating system, a development that sees the e-retail giant take Google on head-to-head, according to several reports.

Google has its own app store called the Android Marketplace.

Although Amazon has yet to officially announce the store, a spokesperson for the company told the LA Times the store is “coming soon”.

The spokesperson added Amazon decided to start with Android apps “since it’s an open ecosystem”, reports the LA Times.

Amazon has already opened a developer portal for the store in January, and some apps had already been submitted for testing.

The store will be available on Android-powered computers, smartphones and tablets, and will also be integrated into Amazon.com, the LA Times said.

“There is a huge volume of apps out there,” Aaron Rubenson, who oversees the store, told Bloomberg. “The challenge that creates for the Android ecosystem is it can be hard to find the products that are relevant to you.”

Amazon will take a 30% cut of sales revenue.
