To Twitter’s Chagrin, Third-Party Clients Still Widely Used

Despite Twitter wanting to stop third-party developers from building clients like TweetDeck and Echofon, those clients are still widely used by those on the micro-blogging website, according to a study conducted by analytics company Sysomos.

42% of all tweets sent on 11 March were from non-official apps, Sysomos said. The remaining 58% were sent either on Twitter.com or the various mobile apps the company has on offer.

The most popular third-party Twitter app is Ubersocial, followed by TweetDeck and Echofon, Sysomos found.

On Monday, Twitter head of platform Ryan Sarver said his company would like other developers to stop building clients as it may “confuse” users with the many different user interfaces and experiences. He claimed 90% of those on Twitter use the official apps, a number Sysomos is contesting.

“Twitter’s number focus[es] on the total number of users while our analysis looked at total tweets,” Sysomos’ Mark Evans wrote in a blog post. “It means there may be many Twitter ‘official’ users who are not very active.”

Sysomos reviewed a sample of 25 million tweets on 11 March to arrive at its findings.
