At the Creative Mornings event in San Francisco, Mule Design's co-founder and design director Mike Monteiro gave a rousing talk on how to deal with clients who find it exceedingly difficult to open their checkbooks and pay designers.
Despite its title, the talk isn’t all spitting vitriol; Monteiro discusses with his lawyer about the necessity of having tight contracts and hiring legal professionals to draft or review them.
Monteiro also touches on other business aspects of running a creative shop, from managing client relations to how to price services.
“I know this wasn’t as much fun as coming in here and talking about typography and color and design and layout and grids, but if you learn a little bit about this stuff and just feel a little confident about this stuff, you can do that stuff—the stuff you really love doing—that much longer and that much better,” Monteiro said at the end of his talk.
