If you don’t mind having ads splashed on your Kindle screen, Amazon is launching a cheaper version of its eReader called Kindle with Special Offers. This new version will retail for US$114 instead of the US$139 for the regular non-ad Kindle.
The ads will appear in two distinct forms: Kindle special offers, which include ads for Amazon gift cards or select details from the e-retailer, and sponsored screensavers, which have been specially designed for an e-ink display. Both ad types will be displayed as a screensaver as well as on the bottom of the device’s home screen.
Other than the ads, the Kindle with Special Offers will be identical to other Kindles.
“We’re working hard to make sure that anyone who wants a Kindle can afford one,” Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement.
To ensure customers don’t get too turned off by the ads, Amazon is letting users give “hints on the style and types of sponsored screensavers they would like to see”, the company said.
Buick Olay, Visa and Amazon.com Reward Visa Card are sponsoring the first series of screensavers.
