A Swedish philosophy student, Isaac Gerson, has founded the Missionary Church of Kopimism that believes in the ‘sacred act’ of sharing knowledge and information. Gerson hopes the church will be given official recognition as a religion, reports PSFK.
The church has four basic tenets: All knowledge to all; the search for knowledge is sacred; the circulation of knowledge is sacred; and the act of copying is sacred.
Ultimately, the church believes that copying, communication and the sharing of information should not be treated as a crime. This puts Gerson at the opposite end from copyright and DRM believers, who he believes want to “limit the knowledge”.
“To have your information copied is a token of appreciation, that someone think[s] you have done something good,” the church states.
