Woman Sues New York Yankees Over Top Hat Logo

A woman is taking the New York Yankees to court, claiming she owns the copyright to the famous ‘bat in a hat’ logo the baseball team has been using since 1936, according to several reports.

Tanit Buday says her uncle, Kenneth Timur, is responsible for the logo’s design, but he never received compensation for it. She now wants the Yankees to hand over all profits related to the logo, reports Reuters.

To support her claim, filed Monday, Buday has submitted photos of her uncle’s version of the logo, which contain the letter “P”, a signature of Timur’s. Along with the photographs is testimony from a branding expert who said in court documents there are an “exceptionally large number of similarities shared between the logos”, reports Adweek.

A Yankees spokesperson told Adweek: “There is no proof of this claim. This is a wonderful country where anybody can sue for anything, even when the allegations are over 70 years old.”
