Twitter Buys TweetDeck for $40 to $50 Million: TechCrunch

Twitter has acquired popular third-party client TweetDeck for an amount between US$40 million to US$50 million, reports TechCrunch, citing sources close to the deal.

The news confirms a previous report on The Wall Street Journal that the micro-blogging company could pay as much as US$50 million to buy TweetDeck, the impetus for which could have been a result of Twitter’s desire to be rid of third-party clients.

Twitter’s head of platform Ryan Sarver said in March that third-party developers should stop building clients, ostensibly to provide a more mainstream and streamlined experience to its users.

However, the deal to acquire TweetDeck might be to stall UberMedia, which owns the client and several others such as EchoFon and UberTwitter, rack up significant market share, reports TechCrunch.

“Adding TweetDeck to the UberMedia stable of products would give them too much leverage over Twitter,” TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington wrote.
