Climber Sends First Tweet from Top of Mount Everest
A British mountain climber, Kenton Cool, used a “weak 3G signal” and a Samsung Galaxy smartphone to send the first tweet from the highest peak on earth.
Made possible by a Nepalese telecommunications company’s effort to set up 3G stations on Mount Everest last October, Cool’s record is in fact a marketing stunt pulled by Samsung.
The tweet read: “Everest summit no 9! 1st tweet from the top of the world thanks to a weak 3G signal & the awesome Samsung Galaxy S2 handset!”
The tech company sponsored Cool with a Galaxy S2 mobile phone to make the first 3G call and tweet from the summit, according to Mashable.
“I’ve climbed Everest before but have never been able to share the exhilaration and excitement I experience when I reach the top with those back home,” Cool told Mashable. The Briton had already successfully scaled the mountain eight times before.
The climber also shot an unboxing video of the smartphone at the base camp on Everest (see above).
