Haute Société: Le noir sur blanc. Littéralement.
The 3rd edition Month of Photography (MOP) in the Lion City presents the victors of monochrome photography Robert Doisneau at Alliance Française de Singapour and Henry Cartier-Bresson at Arts House plus an introduction of 5 Singaporean photographers curated by established Singaporean photographer, Tay Kay Chin at City Hall @Basheer.
Ceci est une ironie: Littéralement la haute société en noir sur blanc.
A l'imparfait de l'ojectif - Seen through the eyes of the commoners, to judge the private lives of the high societies in their beings of drunken stupor and unglamorous posse trapped in four dimensional frames.
Robert Doisneau, the late French Photographer who is responsible for Le Baiser de l'Hotel de Ville, The Kiss At City Hall, has his 55 prints exhibited at the SG Private Banking Gallery, Alliance Française de Singapour from 7th till 29th June 2006. Part of the Month of Photography 2006, A l'imparfait de l'objectif is proudly sponsored by Epson and supported by Cathay Photo Digital, an exhibition of Rapho Agence Photographique and co-organized by Phish Communication.
Doisneau was born in 'banlieue', the urban fringe around France, Gentilly in the Val-de-Marne, France, on 14th April in 1912. Photography entered his life via a borrowed camera from his step-brother: Lucien Doisneau and when he was working at the Uhlman workshop as an advertising designer. In 1932, he became Assistant to the sculptor-painter photographer, Andre Vigneau. Through this mentor, Robert Doineau discovered his artistic inclination with the image tool and adopted a new perspective to sight and the street of France.
Victim of Time
As a shy cameraman whose earlier subjects were mostly buildings, little things, and his portraits stolen a glance from afar, his relationship between protagonist and photographer developed throughout the years. He is described as the "Victim of Time" by Serene Yap, the Gallery Manager of Alliance Française de Singapour, for the ballet of life was snapped through the development of time from 1930's to 1980's - from the warm and carefree streets to the urban concrete jungle. Doisneau finds less of the urbanized streets for he has always been intrigued by the warmth of the old streets.
Signatures of the culture and lifestyle in France are evident in his photographs, with significance of the story of romance, café and beautiful children. Robert Doisneau took portraits of famous creative people such as Picasso, Tati and Prévert in the friendliest demeanor and in a way where there seems to be silent communication and telepathy between them and him.
"I am very thankful for "A l'imparfait de l'objectif," says Don Wong, photojournalist based in Singapore.
