New Chinese Soldiers More Adept with CPUs than WMDs
China has admitted to building a digital security squad meant to protect the nation from cyber attacks, reports TIME.com. The so-called “online blue army” is a 30-strong commando unit of expert hackers that will, China assures, not be used to “initiate an attack on anyone”.
However, as the magazine points out, the presence of the squad is “ironic because it is the Chinese themselves who are most often blamed by other governments as instigators of cyber malfeasance”.
Just yesterday, Google revealed Chinese hackers were responsible for breaking into Gmail accounts, including those of senior US government officials, reports Reuters.
Add to that the recent Pentagon statement that cyber attacks will be categorized as acts of war, and military conflicts appear poised to take place in a new sort of landscape: the digital one.
