Artist Realistically Renders Children’s Stick-Figure Monster Sketches

Starting with children’s sketches of monsters, artist Dave DeVries illustrates them as realistically—as far as comic books go—as possible.

The project, titled The Monster Engine, has DeVries rendering stick-figure outlines given to him by children in florid 3D detail. In most examples, the outline of the original characters remain unchanged; DeVries only fills the shapes in with color and texture.

DeVries said his intention was to combine “adult experience with childhood creativity”, using his skills as a professional artist to flesh out the vivid imagination of a child.

“A child… ignores the idea of mass communication by creating images solely from his or her mind,” the artist wrote on his website. “Often, a parent must ask the child to describe what exactly the young artist is drawing.”
