In 2006, the news agency opened a Television News office in the city, becoming the first Western news organization to do so.
The AP reached an agreement with the Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) to make the expansion possible; the deal also included an outline for “cooperation on journalistic and photo/video technology issues”, the AP said. In addition, a joint photo exhibition by the two agencies will be shown in New York next year.
“AP is once again being trusted to open a door to better understanding between a nation and the world,” AP president and CEO Tom Curley said in a statement, calling the deal “historic and significant”.
His counterpart, KCNA president Kim Pyong Ho said: “I hope this agreement contributes not only to the strengthening of relations between our two news agencies but also to the better understanding between the peoples of our two countries and the improvement of the DPRK–US relations.”
DPRK, which stands for Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, is the formal name for the state.
