Rio 2016 Unveils Winning Olympic Village Design

The committee at the helm of the 2016 Olympic Games to be hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has unveiled the winning design for the Olympic Park.

The so-called “Urban Masterplan” was concepted by British firm AECOM, and consists of two phases: an “Olympic Games Mode”, an optimized design for the staging and operation of the event, and a “Legacy Mode”, to be initiated after the Games are over.

Spread over 1,180,000-square-meters, the Park is aimed at conserving the site’s environmental features as well as ensuring the that new developments are conducted in a sustainable manner, the Rio 2016 committee said.

“After the Games, the sports venues and new developments will form a reference for the city in terms of urban planning and sustainability,” the committee wrote in a blog post. “The Urban Masterplan frees up at least 60% of the Olympic Park area for future developments.”

The Park’s overall design was inspired by Brazil’s natural environment, AECOM associate director Adam Williams said in a statement. It will contain five ‘villages’ inspired by rare flora and will comprise canopy structures that provide shade and shelter, according to Fast Company.
