How Shepard Fairey's First Trip to NYC Influenced His Art

In this video produced by Obey, American street artist Shepard Fairey talks about how his art was influenced by graffiti, skateboarding and punk rock.

“There’s no financial reward to this, it’s just about the passion of expressing yourself in public space and the empowerment of that,” Fairey said about graffiti.

A key moment of Fairey’s art career, in street art, was a school trip to New York.

“There was something really pure and direct about graffiti, and after that trip I thought, ‘I want to do something like that, I want to go out and do stuff in public,” he said.

Shortly after the trip, he got started with the Andre the Giant Has A Posse sticker and from then, he took on further stages of graffiti, applying the techniques he learnt in skateboarding and punk rock.
