Twitter to Show Ads from Companies You Don’t Follow
Twitter is readying a new ad product that will for the first time serve up ads to users from company accounts they don’t already follow.

These ads will appear on a user’s timeline; where previously users had to follow, say, @Starbucks to see a Starbucks ad, this new plan will mean users who don’t follow the coffee chain might see an ad for a new sugary drink.

Instead, as long as Twitter thinks a user is similar to those following @Starbucks, it will show the ad, according to All Things Digital.

“This marks the first time that Twitter will show ads to users who didn’t take some direct action to trigger them, either by following a specific account or by searching for a term on the service,” wrote All Things Digital’s Peter Kafka.

It is also an expected evolution of Twitter’s ad strategy. In July, the micro-blogging website pushed its ‘Promoted Tweets’ ads to users’ timelines so that they appear as a regular tweet.

The new ad scheme will launch to a small group of users by end-September.
