Obama will take questions on jobs and the economy during the event, scheduled for 6 July, that people can pose via Twitter with the hashtag #AskObama. Co-founder of the micro-blogging service Jack Dorsey will moderate the event, as Mark Zuckerberg did for the Facebook town hall.
In addition, Obama will invite a select few of his online followers to the White House for an in-person meet-up.
“Twitter offers a compelling way to not only get information out but also to understand what people have to say about an issue,” special assistant to the president and director of digital strategy Macon Phillips told The New York Times.
The move comes as Obama seeks to leverage Twitter as a key force in his re-election campaign. In June, his campaign team announced on the social network that the president will be posting his own tweets on the @BarackObama account, signed off “-BO”.
