Artist Creates Makeshift Tattoo Gun from Household Objects
Using a needle, thread, tape, a nine-volt battery and a part from an old tape player, tattoo artist Scott Campbell created a makeshift tattoo gun. And with it, he and gave his friend a tattoo in a park.
“Tattoos are about the ‘now’ and spontaneity,” Campbell said.
Unlike regular tattoo guns he has worked with, Campbell found the ‘prison’ tattoo gun “a little bit slower”, but that gave him more time to get the inking done.
“Tattoo is the most ephemeral of all of [mediums I’ve worked in],” he said.
“One thing I like about the tattoo business [is that it’s] like a romantic criminal lifestyle. You don’t need anything but hands to make a living.”
