Photographer Captures The Intimate Side of Japanese Yakuza Gang
Belgian photographer Anton Kusters spent two months with one of Japan’s biggest gang, Yakuza, and captured the intimate moments that outsiders have never seen before.

Kusters negotiated and gained exclusive access to follow Yakuza around Tokyo—from nightclubs to business meetings, bathhouses and funerals.

The Yakuza are loyal and bound by a strict and ruthless moral code, and are “known to cut off the ends of their fingers to prove the sincerity of an apology”.

The gang is estimated to have 80,900 active members. Their activities involve “drug dealing, extortion, illegal gambling and violent turf wars”.

Kusters’s documented photographs would be put into his book, Odo Yakuza Tokyo (YAKUZA | I heed your call).
