Scientists Develop Gadgets to Read Human Emotions
Two scientists working together developed tools that allows people to ‘read’ the emotions of others, reports the New Scientist.

MIT’s Rosalind Picard and Cambridge’s Rana el Kaliouby designed and built a “social X-ray specs” and an audio reader called the “jerk-o-meter”, machines that can understand a range of human expressions.

The glasses are outfitted with a camera and earphone. The camera analyses facial expressions—thinking, agreeing, concentrating, interested, confused, disagreeing—evinced through 24 points on a person’s face. Software developed by Picard then summarizes the data and sends it to the earphone.

The second tool is a small electronic badge meant to be worn as a necklace. Its audio sensors record the pitch, volume and other factors of someone’s voice before sending the information wirelessly to a smartphone or any other device that can display the data graphically.

According to the two scientists, the tools are valuable to people suffering from autism, team members working together and of course, salespeople looking to deliver a perfect pitch.
