Instead, Adobe would be investing into HTML5 technology for creating mobile-browser content.
This means that iPhone and iPad users would have improved browsing experiences—as they have trouble accessing sites built with Flash—and would no longer be ‘disadvantaged’ for not having devices that support Flash.
Apple’s late founder Steve Jobs famously derided that Flash was “an inefficient power-hog”, not to mention “unreliable and ill-suited for mobile devices”, and refused to let Flash run on his iOS devices.
With Adobe’s surrender, web developers will most likely have to move over to HTML5 to produce web content.
Adobe will be integrating HTML5 technology into its current and future software programs, such as Illustrator and Dreamweaver.
David Wadhwani, head of Adobe’s digital media business unit, said that Adobe will continue to invest in Flash technology for mobile applications, but these mobile applications would run through Adobe AIR app as a platform on mobile devices.
